AI as Mirror of Erised
Ai-powered tools have a blind spot. The output of those tools seems plausibly correct. However the burden is shifted to the consumer to verify the correctness of the information. Often, AI-generated text contains subtle inaccuracies hidden within what generally sounds plausibly correct. A recent famous example is Google’s AI Overviews feature telling users to put glue on pizza.
This brings to mind the Mirror of Erised, which shows the viewer what they desperately want to see:
However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge nor truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.
- Dumbledore on the Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
I don’t know yet whether AI creates more delight in user experiences - where most of the hype and promise of AI tools is - than it contributes more frustration between user and user interface.
But I know the work we do is ultimately meant for human use and enjoyment, and anything disconnected from human reality will not contribute positively to that goal.
